Storia dell’arte e film studies.

RV

Montaggio e cinema politico in Ejzenštejn e Vertov
di Pietro Montani

ABSTRACT: The relationship between Eisenštein and Vertov - especially in relation to the way they conceived and used the practice of editing in their films - has been in many cases understood as an opposite, or even conflicting, one. According to Eisenštein, especially in the last phase of his production, editing is functional to aesthetic and artistic purposes; Vertov instead essentially linked his idea of editing to a political project that had its highest expression in Kinoglaz. By resizing reasons of this opposition one can say that both directors assigned to cinema an important educational task through which putting forward a change in human condition.

ABSTRACT: My article aims to analyze the montage of the famous prologue of Un Chien Andalou, created and written by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali in 1929, drawing on its script. I try to show the close relationship between the eye-cutting in Un Chien andalouand the sacrificial dimension of the cut, exemplarily performed by two different forms of montage of attractions: the sequence of the slaughtered ox at the end of Eisenstein's first full-length film Strike(1924), and the photographs by Eli Lotar illustrating Bataille's article entitled Abattoir(Slaughterhouse), published in 1929 on the sixth issue of Documents. As a methodological backdrop I will focus both on the principle of the "Montage of Attractions", formulated by Sergei Eisenstein in the essay titled Montaz attrakcionov-Kino(drafted in 1924 and published in 1925), and on the "Critique of the Eye" forged by Georges Bataille in a series of essays of the late '20s and early '30s.

ABSTRACT: In the Twenties, many artists involved with the "avant-guard" (Dadaists, Surrealists, Russian Constructivists and so on) were interested in film. But their ideas were in many ways opposed to those of the cineasts who were looking for a recognition of the film as art, on the basis of an academic and out of date conception of the great Art. Thus, artists and poets (like Hans Richter, Fernand Léger, Man Ray, Jacques Vaché, Robert Desnos, Dziga Vertov...) looked towards a new experimental art, far from the traditional means and attitudes (included "artistic" means).

André Bazin’s Film Theory and Olivier Assayas’ Summer Hours (2008)
di Angela Dalle Vacche
ABSTRACT: In her essay Dalle Vacche reads Olivier Assayas' Summer Hours in the light of Andre Bazin's ontological view of photography as a form of parthenogenesis based on contingency. While dwelling on Assayas' use of the long take at the beginning and at the end of the film, Dalle Vacche points out that contingency is at the heart of the integrity of space and natural temporality. The transition from one generation to the next involves not only life and death, but also the dispersion of art objects from a private art collection to the museum and to new and unpredictable owners. This dispersal matches Bazin's understanding that painting is a centripetal, inward-bound medium, whereas the cinema works like a centrifugal force that reaches out not only to the masses, but also to intercepts level of experience which pierce through the most rooted visual cliches. In this sense, cinema is an anti-anthropocentric medium where the director can express a personal vision within a dialectical relationship of understanding for whatever is not controllable or predictable in the ways of the world. Dalle Vacche's major concern has to do with how digital imaging is based on human design. Such a human origin makes new media anthropocentric and much closer to painting and the plastic arts in general. Dalle Vacche argues that the malleability of the digital image raises ethical issues, while the anthropocentric nature of new media risks perpetuating old cliches, rejecting moments of spontaneous insight into reality, and replacing ambiguity and imperfections with control and self-empowerment at the expenses of a more balanced and less contrived relationship between self and other.
In Change Mummified (2001)[i], Phil Rosen discusses André Bazin’s definition of the cinema as the embalming of duration. However, besides the past and temporality, Bazin’s theory is keen on the future. Set in motion by the cinematic apparatus, the photographic record becomes a singular collective experience that customizes natural human perception to the illusion of presence and life. At the same time, this irrational suspension of disbelief is a leap of faith into both the new and the unknown[ii]. To expand on Rosen’s work, there are also major differences between the cinema and the museum. In a museum, the level of control is much higher than the one achievable during the shooting process.

ABSTRACT: This article examines one of the theories of art exposed by Jean-Luc Godard in Histoire(s) du cinéma(1988-1998): the symbolic alternation between images in color and in black-and-white. The black-and-white era is related to the Second World War that culminates with the Holocaust, but it was forecast, according to Godard, by the beginnings of the cinema and even by the “terrible” etchings of Rembrandt. These comparisons, apparently arbitrary, are to be considered a powerful intuition on the different memories that emanate from apparently similar images, whether they are in color or in black-and-white. This “double memory” is especially striking in the Histoire(s)in the cases of Adolf Hitler and Georges de La Tour.
1946. Pierre Guyotat a six ans.

Hearsay of the Soul, de Werner Herzog. Tableau(x) d’une installation
par Philippe Bettinelli
ABSTRACT: Starting as a review of Hearsay of the Soul, Werner Herzog’s installation for the 2012 Whitney Biennial, this article is questioning the influence of Hercules Segers, a Dutch etcher from the seventeenth century, on Herzog’s cinema. Curiously, critics and scholars have focused for decades on the presence of German romanticism in the director’s work, leaving aside the question of other art-related influences. By looking for Segers’ impossible landscapes in Herzog’s movies, we’re also wondering how a movie director can film a land that doesn’t exist.

ABSTRACT: Moving from a theoretical angle, the essay inspects the work run by Jean-Luc Godard around the colour as a film composition tool within the time lapse in between 1960-1967, therefore within the so called Karina period. The text displays the specific features of the French-Swiss author’s colorism, its key role in Godard’s former cinema, its peculiar models as they’re actually implemented from a film to another, starting from Une femme est une femme (1961) till Anticipation, ou l’amour en l’an 2000 (1967).

ABSTRACT: Since 1927 cinema has occupied a predominant position in the aesthetical and theoretical reflections of Salvador Dalì. He saw it not only as a medium able to portray reality as in a picture, but also as a way to capture unusual and hidden aspects of things. The greatness of what the Catalan artist defines “cine antiartístico” resides in the chance to gather, through the camera, elements that are usually taken for granted or are invisible to the human eye. Nevertheless, after having realized two manifesto-films of the Surrealist movement in collaboration with Luis Buñuel – Un chien andalou and L’Âge d’or– Dalì’s position in relation to the cinema has seemingly changed. In the “prologue” of the film Babaouo (1932) that is titled Abrégé d’une histoire critique du Cinéma, written by Dalì but never shot, his initial enthusiasm for cinema as a medium and its superiority over painting appears to have been completely re-evaluated. This does not mean, however, that the Catalan artist’s interest in the “seventh art” has waned.

ABSTRACT: This article analyses blurred image (Unschärfe) and grey monochromy as key elements in Gerhard Richter's work. In particular, they seem to play a central role not only in Richter's well-known photo-paintings (Fotobilder), but also in his cinematic oeuvre, that is to say his short experimental film Volker Bradke (1966). The 16mm film Volker Bradke was created for the eponymous exhibition held at the Galerie Schmela in Düsseldorf on 13 December 1966. This exhibition turned out to be a multimedia installation – including painting, photography and film – where blurred image can be read as a means to represent the richness of the reality (thanks to a representation with unclear and undefined outlines) and grey image becomes the means that Richter had recursed to, in order to distance himself from any feelings, emotions and specific points of view.

ABSTRACT: “Exhibited” cinema, “installed” cinema “re-located” cinema. Many contemporary art exhibitions show and re-install cinema; but at the same time, many films are incorporating video-installations: as a previous project, as the memory of an exhibition, as a sort of “house” to be visited, as a new style and a new kind of images. Films to be visited as exhibitions, but with the paradox of a cinematic temporality. Agnès Varda’s Les plages d’Agnès (and the reference to the exhibition “L’ile et elle”) and Marco Bellocchio’s Vincere; critical and theoretical approach to this kind of new images and flanerie in and between cinema, video and contemporary art.

ABSTRACT: In his famous essay Art and Objecthood(1967), Michael Fried dismisses Minimal art, considered as a threat to authentic Modernist art. Furthermore, in one crucial, albeit somewhat obscure, part of the same essay he also dismisses film. In 1968, Morgan Fisher started making films that can be seen as a reaction to this double dismissal. The aim of this essay is precisely to point out the means through which Fisher managed to articulate a theoretical counteroffensive to Fried's thought. In particular, we will focus on two major aspects of Fisher's work (in both film and visual art), that is to say the will to avoid composition and the valorization of the “marginal” characteristics of film (what Derrida called, in his reading of Kant's Critique of the Power of Judgment, the parergonof the work of art).

ABSTRACT: Paul Sharits is an american filmmaker that has costantly tried to reflect upon cinema and its structure. This text is an attempt to circumscribe some topics that inform his work on film. It is merely an introduction to his “metric”, “structural” films. It probably shows the impossibility of catching them completely. I’ve limited myself by suggesting an area of relevance that is (in my opinion) connected to his work: the effort to get rid of actors, narrative and theatrical structures (according to some statements made years before by Kazimir Malevich), the “frame” as subject matter, the importance of the film projection (and of the film projector, instead of the movie camera), the reflection on flicker effect (considered in early cinema as a technical flaw) and its perception. I discuss briefly some relations with modernism, although I think that his work has more to do with certain statements made by painters since the second part of the XIX century. His films remain, in some way, splendidly unseizable.
