ABSTRACT: This article offers a survey of the significant damages caused to the cultural heritage of the city and province of Ferrara by the earthquake that stroke Emilia Romagna and Northern Italy on the 20th and 29th May 2012. All the ancient churches of the city - a Unesco World Heritage site - have been less or more significantly hit, but the most serious artistic damage occurred in the province: in the village of Sant'Agostino the 18th century parish church partially collapsed, and the precious baroque oratory of San Carlo was completely destroyed. In the town of Cento - hometown to the great 17th century painter il Guercino, who left here some of his masterpieces - all the works of art were removed  from churches and from the City Picture Gallery, seriously injured by the earthquake and the aftershocks.

Ferrara

ABSTRACT: The present essay deals with the effects of the recent earthquake on the art heritage in the area of Mantua. In the city the Ducal Palace was heavily wounded, as well as the belltower of the St. Barbara palatine church (the upper part collapsed), and the Palazzo della Ragione. Severe damages occurred to many towns in the south of Mantua. More than one hundred churches are now closed and the most damaged are the parish churches in Bondeno di Gonzaga, Moglia and Quistello. Art objects from these temples have already been transferred in alarmed deposits; many safekeepings of historical buildings have already been accomplished.
